EQUINE
ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY (EAP) is a professional field in which
horses are utilized as a tool for emotional growth and learning.
EAP is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse
professional. It is considered a short-term or “brief” approach
due to the intensity and effectiveness
Participants learn about themselves and others by
participating in activities with the horses, and then discussing
feelings, behaviors and patterns.
The focus of EAP is NOT horsemanship or riding. In
fact, 95% takes place on the ground.

The
focus of EAP involves using horses in activities to apply certain life
skills. Tools used in EAP activities include but are not limited
to: non-verbal communication; assertiveness, creative thinking
and problem solving; leadership,
work, taking responsibility, teamwork and relationships; confidence;
and attitude.
EAP addresses a number of mental health issues and
developmental needs. It is a powerful and effective therapeutic
approach.
